What does mercerized mean? It is a method of treating cotton fibres to improve the thread made from it. The threads are passed through a bath of a special liquid while under tension, and this helps the dye to be taken up into and stay in the cotton fibres, greatly improving colourfastness. It also creates a bit of a sheen on the threads. This sheen is enhanced by having the thread pass through a phase where all the tiny little threads that stick out are burned away, so that the thread is smoother with a greater lustre.
