What does mercerized mean? It is a method of treating cotton fibres to improve the thread made from it. The threads are passed through a bath of a special liquid while under tension, and this helps the dye to be taken up into and stay in the cotton fibres, greatly improving colourfastness. This sheen is enhanced by having the thread pass through a phase where all the tiny little threads that stick out are burned away, so that the thread is smoother with a greater lustre.
